Economic Assessment of Irrigation with Desalinated Seawater in Greenhouse Tomato Production in SE Spain

چکیده

This study assesses the impact of irrigating with desalinated seawater (DSW) on profitability greenhouse tomato in south-eastern Spain, comparing different water-quality sources both traditional sanding cultivation and soilless hydroponic production. The assessment is based combination partial crop budgeting techniques field data from LIFE DESEACROP Project experimental activities. Our results show that exclusive use DSW for production increases fertilization costs by 20% systems 34% cultivation, water 30% 48% soil cultivation. As a result, increase 5% 3% are reduced when blended brackish water. However, lower salinity DSW, compared conventional resources area, yield profitability. Soilless would also but only if good quality available. materialization potential benefits requires improving through increased DSW. Otherwise, system, better adapted to area’s poor soils bad water, be more profitable.

management of irrigation water salinity in greenhouse tomato production under calcareous sandy soil and drip irrigation

a greenhouse experiment was conducted during the growing seasons (2008/2009 and 2009/2010) to investigate the effects of water quality and soil amendments, irrigation methods and rates on tomato (solanum lycopersicon l. cv. red gold) yield and water use efficiency (wue). irrigation management treatments were fresh (0.86 ds m-1) and saline waters (3.6 ds m-1), surface and subsurface irrigation m...

Tomato Production in Spain without Methyl Bromide

In the Mediterranean area, tomato soilborne pathogens used to be controlled by methyl bromide, particularly in protected cultivation. To decrease the use of this fumigant, non-chemical and chemical alternatives were developed and implemented in many Mediterranean countries. However, the success of the alternative depends on the degree of its integration in an integrated pest management programme.

Greenhouse Tomato Production with High Saline Nutrient Solution Simulating a Re- circulating Irrigation System without Environmental Discharge

Increased tomato fruit quality in response to increased salinity is well documented (Li, 2000). However, the increased fruit quality is achieved at the expenses of severe yield losses mostly due to reduced fruit size (fresh weight) and increased incidence of physiological disorders such as blossom end rot (BER). The ability to minimize the negative effects of high salinity at the root level, wh...

Effect of Greenhouse Gases Dissolved in Seawater

A molecular dynamics simulation has been performed on the greenhouse gases carbon dioxide and methane dissolved in a sodium chloride aqueous solution, as a simple model of seawater. A carbon dioxide molecule is also treated as a hydrogen carbonate ion. The structure, coordination number, diffusion coefficient, shear viscosity, specific heat, and thermal conductivity of the solutions have been d...
